Welcome back. This month we're diving into principle number two of our three-month focus on leadership of self. Last month we talked about leading yourself. Next month we'll wrap up this leadership of self section by focusing on growing your character. This month we’re focusing on building your tribe!
These three principles - leading yourself, building your tribe, growing your character - creates a healthy base of leadership that will protect and elevate your journey of leading other people and your team. Think of it as building a foundation that everything else rests on.
So this month we're tackling something that's going to unlock a whole new level of energy and momentum in your leadership - and that's building your tribe.
Here's what I've discovered after years of working with leaders: the most successful, fulfilled, and impactful leaders I know all have one thing in common - they're surrounded by the right people. And here's the exciting part - this isn't just for CEOs or elite athletes. This is available to every single one of us.
I learned this lesson from a book that had a chapter title that stopped me in my tracks: "The Limits of Self-Help." Just the title taught me something profound. The author wrote this line that I can't get out of my head: "Read any story of transformation and you will find a significant other."
Think about that for a second. Every incredible story you know - every breakthrough, every achievement, every moment of real growth - there were other people involved. And that's actually amazing news, because it means you don't have to figure it all out alone.
Yet so many of us are trying to lead in isolation, make decisions by ourselves, and carry the weight of our dreams solo. But what if there was a better way?
When we stop learning from others, we plateau when we could be soaring.
When we're making decisions in isolation, we miss the wisdom and perspective that comes from community.
When we're not intentionally investing in anyone, we miss out on the joy and purpose that comes from pouring into others.
This is why you need what I call your tribe. And I'm going to make this really simple and exciting for you.
Your tribe is built by three groups.
Those who are ahead of you.
Those who are beside you.
And those you are following you.
The people ahead of you will be who you’re learning from.
The people beside you are who you get to learn with.
And the people following you are the people you get to teach how to be learners.
When you have these three groups active in your life, something magical happens.
You’re staying in a a humble, honest and grounded sweet spot of leadership.
Humble - because you’ve got people that are investing in you who you get to receive from
honest - because you’ve got people close enough to you to learn with
and grounded - because you’ve got people in your life that you’re investing in.
You as a leader leading yourself, are a leader pursuing constant inner transformation and growth.
Real change happens in community.
And that’s what we’re building here.
This isn’t about adding more relationships to your plate. It’s about being strategic with the relationships you choose to invest in and build.
Over the next few weeks, we're going to break this down practically. How do you find these people? How do you approach them? How do you maintain these relationships in a way that's energizing rather than draining?
For now, I want you to get excited about the possibilities.
Because here's what I know for sure - when you build the right tribe around you, everything gets better. Your decisions get wiser. Your growth accelerates. Your impact multiplies. And honestly? It makes the journey the journey.
On that note, that’s all for today.
Welcome to Build Your Tribe month!
