1 | Welcome to Leading Self Month!

Welcome back! This month we're diving into a series on leadership of self. We’ll be focusing high level on leading yourself, and then next month we’ll focus on building your tribe, and then after that, we’ll focus on growing your character.

So, the next 3 months will be the 3 principles: lead yourself, build your tribe, grow your character.

These 3 principles all emphasize how you can lead yourself and set your leadership up to move from a place of strength!

Here’s why we’re starting to approach leadership with a big emphasis on leadership of self.

I’ve noticed most leadership conversations only involve a small piece of leadership.

And that’s the “out in front leadership.” You know - the moments where you’re in front of a group, providing clarity, casting vision, empowering the team.

Here’s what I’d like to say first: leading your team is a small part of leadership. There’s actually two major parts to leadership that come before this:

and that’s leadership of self, and then leadership of people 1:1.

If you can imagine an arc with 4 phases on it, the first phase is leadership of self. The second phase is leadership of others 1 on 1. The third phase is leadership of teams. And the fourth phase is leadership of teams of teams.

This is what we’re going to call the Leadership Arc.

Lead Self.

Lead Others 1-1.

Lead Team.

Lead Teams of Teams.

Like I said a moment ago, most leadership conversations center around the third phase. Meaning, some of the most foundational aspects of leadership are missed and skipped.

Not here.

For the next three months we’re going to do a deep dive into leadership of self.

A crucial aspect to leadership that is rarely talked about or focused on.

If I were to just train leaders on how to lead their team, and skip how to lead themselves, I’d be setting leaders up for failure.

So let’s jump straight into what to expect this month.

We’re going to cover some things that perhaps you’ve already got sorted. If that’s the case. Amazing!

If not, then just know you getting yourself sorted is setting you up to be able to lead from a place of strength!

And I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

But it’s going to be on you to apply these steps to your own life. Put them into action.

Here’s what we’re going to cover this month:

We’re going to focus on three things: discipline, prioritization and self-awareness. If you can’t conquer these three things, you’ll be at war with these three things until you do.

The way we’re going to approach discipline is by elevating how you lead yourself physically and mentally: Your body and mind are your primary tools. How you care for them affects everything else you do.

The way we’re going to approach prioritization is by elevating how you own your time and organization.

If you can't manage your own priorities and commitments, how can you help others with theirs?

And lastly, we’re going to approach self-awareness by focusing on clarity around your golden circle of why, how and what. This is about you getting to know yourself and then owning who you are.

A healthy leader is a leader clear on who they are, who can articulate why they’re making decisions, and live in such a way they never compromise their character or integrity because they have cultivated both discipline and the ability to prioritize.

This is going to be a powerful month! And I’m so excited!

This type of inner work is what gets me fired up the most!

Before I wrap up for today: here’s something I want you to consider and even get excited about.

I’ve mentioned that I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with collegiate, professional and Olympic athletes. Here’s something to know about some of the top performers in the world.

They never ever stopped focusing on the fundamentals.

Every day, the way they started their training or practice session or workout, they started with the basics.

They never ever skipped the basics.

And it’s because of this, they always moved from a place of strength.

No short cuts. No hacks.

Discipline. Focus on their top priorities. Even when those priorities were really boring and repetitive. They still did them.

The basics they chose to commit to when no one was watching is what set them up for huge success for when the entire world was watching.

Success, thriving, was not something they left to chance.

They made sure their foundation was rock solid.

And my thought, is that you can develop this type of lifestyle as well!

Thriving!

Everyone has just as much opportunity to lead themselves well. It’s our decision to do so or not.

My goal is to help cut out all the noise and bring what really matters to the surface.

As you get clear on who you are,

cultivate discipline to what matters most to you,

take care of yourself,

unlock amazing focus,

amplify your decision making

and elevate the way you lead your life on a daily basis.

Imagine waking up and feeling momentum in your life that you’ve owned, you’ve earned.

This is your life!

How exciting is it that you can grow every single day!

You don’t need to wait on anyone.

You don’t need a better boss or better job description. You can elevate your life utilizing your own agency.

You can become a leader before your title or job description says so.

By becoming a leader of self.

Yes, this is going to involve effort, energy, discomfort.

But you’re on the path to becoming a truly confident leader, because your confidence has been built from the inside out.

On that note, that’s all for today.

Welcome to this month of Leading Self!
